Gothic Lace Dress

Difficulty:

Time-Consuming:

This is now my favourite thing I've knit. This pattern fits a size 6 US, roughly, and is done in 2 pieces. I do recommend wearing some kind of slip under this, as some of the stitching does make it a tad see-through.  As you can probably tell, I'm not wearing one in the picture. Tsk tsk, eh?

Anyway, for this project, I used 5.5 mm needles, and 5 skeins of Berroco Vintage wool (198m/100g).  For the second colour used in the straps, I just used scrap wool lying around of the same weight. Also for this project, I used a tapestry needle, a sewing needle and thread, and 8 buttons (23 mm in diameter).

Abbreviations Used in Pattern:

Sts = stitches
K = knit (k4 = knit 4 stitches).
P = purl (p4 = purl 4 stitches).
P2tog = purl 2 stitches together.
P2togtbl = purl 2 stitches together through the back of the loop.
YO = Yarn over: bring yarn around needle so that it will be knit/purled as a new stitch on the next row.
K2tog = knit 2 stitches together.
psso = pass slipped stitch over (take the previously slipped stitch off the right needle and pull it over the stitch made after it was passed.)
skpsso = slip one stitch, knit one stitch, then pass slip stitch over (with the left-hand needle, take the previously slipped stitch off the right needle and pull it over the stitch knit after it was passed).
BO = bind off
k inc1 = knit 1, but before pulling the stitch off of the left-hand needle, loop the right needle through the new stitch again, so as to make 2 stitches in one.

Repeat rows 77 and 78 thirteen more times. ***

Shaping Hips and Waist:

Next row: continue working the pattern as in rows 77 and 78 (allowing for decreases as follows), but at the same time, begin making decreases as follows:  work the 2nd and 3rd sts as k2tog, and work the 2nd and 3rd last sts as skpsso.  Make these decreases every 6 rows 3 more times, then every 4 rows 2 more times.

Shaping the Bodice:

Work 9 more rows without decrease.

Then, begin making increases as follows (front side of work): make 1 stitch between the 2nd and 3rd sts, and make 1 stitch between the 2nd and 3rd last sts.  Make these increases every 10 rows 3 more times

Next (now on purl-side row): after the last increase is made, work and BO the first 6 sts from each of the next 2 rows.

Then work and BO the first 2 sts from each of the next 2 rows.

Next row (purl-side): work and BO the first 2 sts, work 18 sts, then work and BO the next 21 sts, and finish row.

Next row (front side): work and BO the first 2 sts, then work to binded-off sts.  Use a separate yarn tail to work the rest of the row as follows:  work and BO the first 5 sts, then finish the row.

Next row: work and BO the fist stitch, work to the binded-off sts in the center of the row (the 'neck hole').  After 'neck', work and BO first 5 sts, then finish the row.

Next row: work and BO the first stitch, then work to binded-off sts in the center of the row.  Work rest of row after 'neck'.

Next row: before neck, p1, (p2tog)x4, p2togtbl, p1.  After 'neck', p1, p2tog, (p2togtbl)x4, p1.

Next row (front side): with C2 yarn, pick up and knit the 11 binded-off sts from the armhole area, then knit the 1st group of 7 sts already on the needle, then continue the row by picking up and knitting the 31 binded-off sts from the neck area, then the 2nd group of 7 sts already on the needle, then pick up and knit the remaining 11 binded-off sts from the second armhole.

Next row (purl-side): purl.

Next row: k11, k2, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2, k31, k2, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2, k11.

Next row: work and BO the first 11 sts, then p7, work and BO next 31 sts, p7, work and BO rest of row.

Working the Straps:

Next 2 rows: work each remaining group of sts on the needle as: k2, yo, slip, k2tog, psso, yo, k2 on front side, and purl on purl-side.

Repeat these 2 rows 9 more times, then hold work to one side on a spare needle.

Back Piece:

Similar to the front piece, except that after a certain point, the row will be divided into 2 pieces.
Work the back piece the same as the front up to *** (the final repeat of rows 77 and 78).

*At the same time, when the 3rd decrease along the edges is made, the row will be divided and worked in 2 pieces: work the row 38 sts in, and with a separate yarn tail, k inc1, make one, and work the rest of the row.
*Note also, that button holes should be made:  on front-side rows, along the right edge of the 2nd of the 2 divided groups of stitches, work the first 2 sts of the second group of sts on the row as k2tog, yo. Make these button holes every 8 rows.

Shaping the Bodice:

After the last edge decrease is made, work 9 more rows without decrease.

Then, begin making increases as follows (front side of work): make 1 stitch between the 2nd and 3rd sts, and make 1 stitch between the 2nd and 3rd last sts.  Make these increases every 10 rows 3 more times.

Next (now on purl-side row): after the last increase is made, work and BO the first 6 sts from each of the next 2 rows.

Then work and BO the first 2 sts from each of the next 2 rows.

Next row (purl-side): work and BO the first 2 sts, work to beginning of 2nd piece/group of sts, the work and BO the first 17 sts of the 2nd group of sts, and finish the row

Next row: work and BO the first 2 sts, work to the center of the row, then work and BO the first 18 sts of the 2nd piece/group of sts, then finish the row.

Next row (purl-side): first piece: (p2tog)x3, p1, (p2togtbl)x2, p1. Second piece: p1, (p2tog)x2, p1, (p2togtbl)x3.

Next row: with C2 yarn, pick up and knit the 10 binded-off sts from the armhole, then knit the 7 sts already on the needle, then pick up and knit 17 sts.  Second piece: pick up and knit 18 sts, then knit the 7 sts already on the needle, then pick up and knit the 10 binded-off sts of the other armhole.

Next row: purl to the last 2 sts of the 1st piece/group of sts, p2togtbl.  Second piece: p2tog, purl.

Next row: k10, k2, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2, k14, k2tog. Second piece: skpsso, k15, k2, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2, k10

Next row (purl-side): work and BO 10 sts, then purl 7, then work and BO remaining sts of first piece.  Second piece: work and BO 15 sts, then purl 7, then purl and BO remaining 10 sts.

Working the Straps:

Next 2 rows:  work each of the 2 groups of 7 remaining sts as k2, yo, slip 1, k2tog, psso, yo, k2 on front side, and purl on purl side.

Do these 2 rows 10 more times, followed by one more front-side row.

Finishing Off:

Take the front and back pieces of dress, which are currently on 2 separate needles, and alternate moving the stitches from each needle, one stitch at a time, onto a third needle, so that the stitches from the straps of each piece are interlocking.  Then BO the sts 2 at a time.

With a tapestry needle, sew up the edges of the dress.  Then sew on the buttons to line up with the holes on the back of the dress.  Wear with dark nail polish and Bauhaus music playing.
