Sexy Black Lace Top/Minidress

It's stylish, and proof that knitting can be sexy! This pattern fits a size 6 US, roughly. Although the body is meant to be somewhat loose-fitting, if you have a rib cage larger than 34 inches, you may need to repeat the stitch pattern in each row one more time (See end of pattern for measurements).

For this project, I used 5.5 mm needles, and Berroco Ultra Alpaca Light wool (133m/50g). I also used 2 buttons, 1"/2.54 cm in diameter, a tapestry needle to sew the pieces together, as well as a sewing needle to attach the buttons to the end of the collar.  This pattern also makes use of my 28-row lace stitch pattern panel #7.



Abbreviations Used in Pattern:
Sts = stitches
K = knit (k4 = knit 4 stitches).
P = purl (p4 = purl 4 stitches).
P2tog = purl 2 stitches together.
P2togtbl = purl 2 stitches together through the back of the loop.
YO = Yarn over: bring yarn around needle so that it will be knit/purled as a new stitch on the next row.

K2tog = knit 2 stitches together.

skpsso = slip one stitch, knit one stitch, then pass slip stitch over (with the left-hand needle, take the previously slipped stitch off the right needle and pull it over the stitch knit after it was passed, as though it were being cast off).

Front Piece:

Cast on 113 sts.

Row 1: knit.
Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: k1, *begin row 1 of the lace stitch pattern outlined here. Repeat from * to end of row.
Row 4: *work row 2 of the lace stitch pattern. Repeat from * to just before last stitch of row, p1.

Rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29: k1, *work the next front-side row of the lace stitch pattern. Repeat from * to end of row.

Rows 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30: *work the next purl-side row of the lace stitch pattern. Repeat from * to just before last stitch of row, p1.

Repeat rows 3-30 one more time.

Decreases:

Continuing the lace stitch pattern (although it will begin to be interrupted by the decreases along the edges), begin making decreases along the edges as follows: do sts 2 and 3 as k2tog. Do the 2nd and 3rd last sts as skpsso. Do these decreases every 8 rows, 10 more times (91 sts should remain at that point).

Then, begin making 2 decreases at each end of the row, every row (Note: for purl-side row decreases, decreases are done as p2tog tbl for 2nd and 3rd sts, and for 4th and 5th sts; p2tog for 5th and 4th last sts, and 3rd and 2nd last sts).

When row has 27sts, just make 1 decrease at each end on every row. When row has 19 sts, work 5 more rows with no decreases. Bind off.

For Back Piece:

Cast on 113 sts.

Row 1: knit.
Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: k1, *begin row 1 of the lace stitch pattern outlined here. Repeat from * to end of row.
Row 4: *work row 2 of the lace stitch pattern. Repeat from * to just before last stitch of row, p1.

Rows 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29: k1, *work the next front-side row of the lace stitch pattern. Repeat from * to end of row.

Repeat rows 3-30 one more time.

Decreases:

when the row has 71 sts, the back piece will be worked in 2 sections: still making the 2 decreases at each end (every row), work to about halfway through the row, then finish the rest of the row with a separate yarn tail. Back is worked in 2 sections until the end.

When row has 27sts, just make 1 decrease at each end on every row. When row has 19 sts, work 5 more rows with no decreases. Bind off.

For the Collar:

Cast on 15 sts.

Rows 1 and 2: knit.
Row 3: k3, knit and bind off 3 sts, k3, knit and bind off 3 sts, k3.
Row 4: k3, cast on and work (one-at-a-time) 3 sts, k next 3 sts, cast on and work (again, one-at-a-time) 3 sts, knit last 3 sts.

Knit 77 more rows and bind off.

With tapestry needle, sew up the edges of the front and back pieces, and attach the top of each piece to the collar. With sewing needle, attach the buttons so they line up with the button holes.
